How to communicate the purpose of life to the depressed?

In short, I am dealing with a depressed friend who has come to the conclusion that life may be purposeless. I want to give him a nice scholastic synthesis on what the purpose of life is--but with him being merely a lay person with regards to philosophy, I don't know how to effectively communicate it with him. Any tips?

My suggestion would be to start reading the Bible, start with the New Testament (especially Gospel of John) and then work your way to the Old Testament. You really do not need to understand philosophy to read it. Here are some suggested verses in the Bible that might help but I think reading the whole chapter around those verses will is the best way to go.
